Wellington website peaks at Advent
Twas the month before Christmas and one regional tourism organisation received as many visitors to its website in three days as it would normally see in two weeks.
Positively Wellington Tourism’s website www.WellingtonNZ.com hit its busiest day ever on Monday 1 December with 31,144 visits.
The reason? PWT launched its annual Wondrous Wellington Advent Calendar promotion. This promotion is targeted at increasing spend in Wellington through the December–January period by giving visitors to the site the opportunity to download vouchers for different attractions, hospitality businesses and retailers each day.
While distribution of the promotion is targeted at Wellingtonians and New Zealanders the calendar attracts visits from around the world.
“As it’s an Advent calendar, people follow it throughout the month. This means we get every opportunity to provide people with messaging about events in Wellington and reasons to visit Wellington throughout December,” PWT Chief Executive David Perks says.
The timing of the promotion is very important as January is the ‘low season’ for Wellington, in terms of domestic visitor numbers and hotel occupancies.
“We expect that during the month we’ll email out perhaps 60,000 vouchers, each of which will be redeemable during December and January,” David says.
Overcoming seasonality is a key part of the Tourism 2025 goals.
