Unlocking international student potential

TIA is working with Education New Zealand to unlock a valuable growth opportunity.

20 August 2014

TIA is continuing its work with Education New Zealand and Immigration New Zealand to unlock the potential that exists in international education, in particular making it easier for visiting friends and relatives of international students to travel to New Zealand.

The families of international students spend an average of $3600 per visit on tourism, significantly more than other international visitors. The government has targeted export education as a key area for export earnings growth. If the government’s 2025 targets are achieved, tourism’s share will grow from the current $676 million to exceed $1.3 billion, a more than 100% increase on current earnings. That, in itself, provides a huge incentive for tourism to much better link arms with export education.
